Vestibular Schwannoma (Acoustic Neuroma)
These are benign tumours that arise from balance nerves as they travel from the inner ear towards the brain. They are slowly growing and normally cause gradual progressive hearing loss in one ear. The hearing loss can also occur suddenly. Other symptoms include tinnitus, balance problems and facial numbness.
There are three treatment options for vestibular schwannomas namely, regular monitoring with serial MRI scans, Radiotherapy and Surgery.
